Driftwood lamp

As you may have already noticed, light is very important to us. It is something we love to use either by manipulating natural light, fire, or as in this example with a lamp. Another thing we love to make use of is naturally occurring shapes and forms, which driftwood conveniently provides in abundance. So as you would imagine, this lamp sums up most of the things we love to use when we craft things.

The driftwood itself was found on the beach in the Prestatyn area, north wales. Poor Charlie had quite the task in carrying it back as it is no small piece. Especially when it was still soaked from being in the sea, which probably near doubled the weight! After taking a long time to dry out we turned our attention to it and started figuring what it would be good for. It would have been a shame to cut it up given its gentle curves and aesthetic shape. In the end it was decided that it would be best to add to by turning it into a table.

The actual table part is made from a glass shelf salvaged from a dilapidated cabinet. It is supported by four sections of copper pipe with cappings and held above the timber. The legs are also copper piping with plastic feet to protect flooring. This gives it a robust body which stays useful without hiding the raw form of the timber.

The lights were found in a loft. They were originally free standing corner lamps but the base had lost its weights and had turned more than a little flimsy so it had been abandoned to never ending storage. As it goes we think this was a perfect fit as the weighty base easily takes the place and the height makes them useful and versatile. Plus it ticks another of our favourite boxes, rescuing items from going to waste.

So this lamp sums up our approach very well indeed. It looks just as at home in a contemporary environment as it does with a rustic decor. When things come out like this and end up looking great and still being useful, it makes us very happy that we do what we do. To paraphrase a famous quote "we love it when a plan comes together".
